Who are Faeland?

For those of you who don't know us, we're a songwriting duo who write catchy, emotive and uplifting songs from the heart.

Imagine what you'd get if you blended the matured rootsy sounds of Americana & folk with the uplifting catchy melodies of pop giants such as Fleetwood Mac or Adele - well, that's us!

We create all of our music on natural acoustic instruments. The cherry on top is Rebecca's vocals - crystal clear and a voice like honey.

In recent years our music has been heard on radio stations across the globe including on BBC 6 Music in the UK (Gideon Coe & Tom Robinson). Our songs have also been included on multiple "Albums of the Year" Lists (including Folk Radio UK, Shire Folk Magazine and BBC Introducing).

Our song “End of the Day” features on the soundtrack to feature film 23 Walks, starring Alison Steadman (Gavin & Stacey, Secrets & Lies) and Dave Johns (I, Daniel Blake, Fisherman’s Friends) .

“Rebecca has a haunting almost ethereal aura about her voice, and alongside a majestical guitarist, in my eyes they cannot go wrong, I love their music ... amazing duo!

Custom Song Testimonials

Ian Bowley

I wrote a poem for my wife’s birthday. Jacob and Rebecca turned it into a song that was so special, it made my wife cry.

It’s a gift that will tell future generations something about us, long after we are gone.

Faeland are so talented and it was a privilege to watch them at work during our Zoom call. Birthday-wise, the best decision I ever made!

Janice Welsh

I was trying to think of a unique gift for my husband’s birthday and tentatively asked Rebecca and Jacob if they would be able to do a song about a fox who holds a special place in his heart. During a Zoom meeting they started to turn my words into a beautiful song that really moved me.

The end result was so special and my husband loved it. He was quite emotional, but was also grinning from ear to ear, asking how on earth did I manage to arrange it (he loves Faeland’s music and instantly recognised Rebecca’s lovely voice and their wonderful music).

The friends and family who have heard the song were so impressed and moved by it – I think that says a lot about Faeland’s talent. So pleased they did it!

Andy Welsh (song recipient)

Well, it’s my birthday and Janice has just presented me with the most wonderful present. The Magic the Fox song. I’m just stunned. It’s lovely. Thank you both and Janice for such a wonderful gift.

Magic has meant a huge amount to me, and the song will live with me forever.

Janice never ceases to astonish me and I am so fortunate to have the most wonderful wife.

Nicola Dunne

In a year when we have had to be very creative in marking special celebrations and milestones, I could not have asked for a better idea than the offer of commissioning a song from one of our favourite singers.

From taking time to explore ideas and understand the context to playing through musical options, the result is beautiful. A unique song to celebrate a silver anniversary ... Such a special gift and my deepest thanks for creating it for us!

Lucy Spielberg

Can't quite express what a joy it was to work with you on my song.

You captured everything I wanted to say, how I wanted it to feel and completely took my breath away with the end results.

I would do it again in a heartbeat, thank you !!

Emily (song recipient)

It's the most thoughtful present I have ever had. Just so moving!

The Riddlebuck Family

Amazing opportunity to commission a family song for our 4th anniversary all about the things we love. We will do well to improve on anniversary gifts in future years!

Our daughter Gwen age 5 on hearing her verse - 'I was so happy to hear the part of the song about me I didn't know what to do I just had to keep moving' and Moss, age 2 also delighted with his own verse which he can very much join in with.

FAQs

What is a custom song?

A custom song is a song we write specially for you - it's completely personalised to you and your purpose for the song! We tune into the essence of what you want to express, and put it into song form.

It can be a unique gift for a loved one, or something for yourself (perhaps you have some old lyrics or poetry you've always wanted to hear to music!).

We can pick up a lot from a chat or an email, but feel free to provide us with snatches of poetry, memories, thoughts, etc. We'll use this to write the chords, melody, and lyrics for your song. You're also welcome to write your own lyrics (we provide a guide if you need!).

What are your credentials?

Faeland lead songwriter & vocalist Rebecca has years of experience of guiding people through the process of finding their song – “Trust me, everyone has a song in there and I’m confident I can write you something with minimal input”.

Co-writer Jacob is an intuitive guitarist/multi-instrumentalist who has a gift for tuning in to people’s essence and expressing it musically.

Our songs have been played on radio stations across the globe including on BBC 6 Music in the UK (Gideon Coe & Tom Robinson). Our music has also been included on multiple "Albums of the Year" Lists (including Folk Radio UK, Shire Folk Magazine and BBC Introducing), and been featured on feature film 23 Walks starring Alison Steadman and Dave Johns.

Rebecca has a Masters qualification in Music Therapy and a BA in Commercial Music. Jacob has a BA in Popular & World Musics and years of experience as a music teacher and performer.

How much do your custom songs cost?

A standard custom song costs £599. This payment includes:

  • Songwriting
  • Lyric writing and/or editing (if required)
  • Copy of the song which we have recorded and edited
  • The song will be mixed and mastered by an external professional
  • Song Delivery in WAV & MP3
  • Lyric Sheet in PDF

We ask for a deposit of £100 to start the process of writing the first song draft.

We also offer the following optional add-ons:

  • Video (£125) - We'll send you a personalised video of us singing your song (recorded on a phone). We can add a personal message at the beginning!
  • Additional Instruments (£90 per instrument) - We include vocals and a single accompaniment instrument as standard. If you'd like more instruments to fill out the song more, let us know! Choose from guitar, charango, banjo or ukulele (tenor or baritone), or ask us and we'll guide you with what we think will suit the track best! We can also add metallophone or layer up backing vocals.

Can I use my own lyrics or will you write them?

Either! You can write your own lyrics or simply let us know the essence/purpose/reason for your song and we’ll do the rest!

We provide a lyric writing guide if you want help to write your own. We can tweak your lyrics to fit the song and flow with the melody. Alternatively, we can write the lyrics for you based on a chat/email and any extra info you want included (snatches of poetry, thoughts, memories, etc.).

How long will my song take?

Typically it takes 7 working days from our initial chat for us to come up with a rough demo.

Once you OK the demo, it then takes us up to 21 days to create a final recording.

If you need your song more urgently or have a specific date to aim for do get in touch, and we'll let you know what's possible!

Who owns the copyright? Can I share it publicly?

We (Rebecca Nelson and Jacob Morrison) retain 100% ownership of the master and composition of the song. This is the industry standard for song commissions, and protects us as songwriters and musicians.

When you purchase the song, you are granted a Personal Use License. This means you can share your song with friends, post it on your personal social media, use it for personal videos or slideshows, etc. However, you must not monetise the song in any way or use it to promote a business or product. You must not release the song under the name "Faeland" (by all means give us a shout out though!).

If you have any questions or enquiries for commercial commissions please contact us.

Where do you record the song?

We record the song in our home studio. To hear the difference between this and our studio albums, check out the examples at the top of this page.

We now send all our songs to be professionally mixed and mastered (by John Hendicott if available) - this gets the best out of our recordings and helps them to sound great on any system!

What is the process?

Here's an outline of how the process works:
  1. We discuss your purpose for the song and anything you want to include (either via an optional 30-min Zoom meeting or via email).

  2. If you're happy to go ahead, you send us a deposit of £100 and a signed agreement, and we go away and work on a first draft of the song. This process takes up to 7 working days.

  3. As soon as we have a first draft we send you a phone recording via email. This is your last chance to make any changes or send over any additional lyrical or musical ideas which may have sprung to mind since you've heard the recording.

  4. Once we receive the "green light" for the recording we sent to you in Step 3, we create the final recording of your song. Please allow up to 21 working days for the process. The song is recorded using our home studio setup. We'll send it to be mixed and mastered by a professional sound engineer (John Hendicott, if available).

  5. Once the song is completed you will be emailed the song in both WAV and MP3 format. You will also be emailed the final lyrics as a PDF file.

  6. You make the remainder of the payment for the song. The payment covers:

    - Songwriting
    - Lyric writing and/or editing (if required)
    - Copy of your song which we have recorded and edited
    - The song will be mixed and mastered by an external professional
    - Song delivery in WAV & MP3
    - Lyric sheet in PDF

NB: The song will be created and recorded with one instrumental part by Jacob (choose from guitar, charango, banjo or ukulele), and Rebecca's voice. If you'd like more parts to be added, you can add these at an optional extra cost (see below).

Which instruments will be on my song?

Choose from your choice of accompaniment instrument (either guitar, banjo, ukulele or charango), which will be performed by Jacob. Rebecca will sing lead vocals for your song.

You can ask for additional instruments for an optional extra cost of £90 per instrument. Choose from guitar, charango, banjo or ukulele (tenor or baritone), or let us guide you! We can also add glockenspiel or layer up backing vocals if it suits the song.
